Philippi lies 9 miles inland from Kavalla. Its origin dates from
about 360 BC but was reestablished by the Romans as a
colony. Extensive ruins of temples, the forum, gates, reliefs of
deities, a theater, a gymnasium, and other finds can be seen
there. The photo is the traditional jail in which Paul and Silas
sang praises until the an earthquake led to the conversion of
their jailor. It originally was a cistern, but the location fits the
location by being near the forum. Cisterns sometimes were
used as jails.
