Thessalonica lies to the west of Philippi and also is on the Egnatian Way. Today it is Greece’s second largest city, called both Thessaloniki and Salonica. It was the capital of Macedonia; later, under the emperor Galerius (AD 305-311) it became the capital of the eastern empire. The current main street probably follows the route of the ancient Egnatian Way. The photo shows the Arch of Galerius, who was one of the worst persecutors of Christians.
