Thessalonica lies to the west of Philippi and also is on the
Egnatian Way. Today it is Greece’s second largest city, called
both Thessaloniki and Salonica. It was the capital of
Macedonia; later, under the emperor Galerius (AD 305-311) it
became the capital of the eastern empire. The current main
street probably follows the route of the ancient Egnatian Way.
The photo shows the Arch of Galerius, who was one of the
worst persecutors of Christians.
