Paul and Silas had to flee Thessalonica when strong
opposition arose. They made their way west to Berea, where
the Jews there "were more noble than those in Thessalonica"
(Acts 17:11). The adversaries followed them there, though, and
Paul had to be escorted out of the city by night. He went by ship
to Athens, where he appeared before the court that met on the
Areopagus, the hill in the photo. The court was called by the
same name; among other duties it had responsibility for
religious affairs for the city. Though Paul had scant success in
Athens, one Areopagus judges believed. Dionysius later was
canonized and a church was erected next to the Areopagus in
his honor.
