Paul’s ship landed at Tyre, where he was warned against
going on to Jerusalem. Convinced he needed to continue, Paul
disembarked at Caesarea Maritima (by the Sea). The harbor
extended out from the ruins seen in the photo. Many of the
pillars and stones were reused by later inhabitants of the city.
Archeological work has progressed both on land and under
the sea to the point where the design of the harbor and the
layout of the ancient city can be reconstructed. Herod the Great
was an innovative builder; the city’s sewer system was flushed
out by the tides every day.
