As a Roman citizen, Paul had the right to appeal his case directly to the Roman emperor. He decided circumstances warranted his exercise of this right, and so he was put aboard a ship for the journey. Acts 27 tells the harrowing story of the ill-fated ship and its wrecking off the coast of Malta. Chapter 28:1-10 tells of Paul’s adventures on the island. Malta became a center of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem after the Crusaders lost the Holy Land and later the large island of Rhodes to the Moslem conquest. The photo shows the Crusader moat and part of the formidable fortress they built.
