The Appian Way ran from Puteoli to Rome, the last leg of the
journey. The photo shows the Porta San Sebastiano, once the
Porta Appia, the traditional gate through which Paul entered
Rome. Though it is on the Appian Way, the wall was built by the
emperor Aurelian in the 3rd century AD. Acts ends with Paul
under house arrest in Rome. Most scholars believe he was
later released and perhaps visited Spain before he was again
in Rome and martyred by being beheaded during the time of
Nero, whose reign ended in AD 68.
