Tarsus surely was the base from which Paul and Silas visited
the churches of Cilicia and Syria. It also was Paul’s hometown,
a major city that has existed at least since the Stone Age. In
Paul’s day it was a renowned center of Stoic philosophy and
boasted a major university. The present city is much smaller
than in Paul’s time and the Roman city lies perhaps 20 feet
below the present level. The photo is of Cleopatra’s Gate, a
monumental arch which existed when Cleopatra’s boat sailed
up the Cydnus River to meet with Marc Antony in their famous
rendevous. The city also boasts "Saint Paul’s Well," which is
ancient enough to have been there in Paul’s day.
