A New Testament View of Women provides a sound interpretation of
the New Testament teachings regarding women--alternatives to the
extreme submission view, as well as the militant independence view.
Book Review Editor for The Baptist Standard assessed it this way:
"Her persistent efforts in interpreting each scripture within
its biblical context adds a decisive dimension to the accuracy of
her application of the biblical truth to women today. This is a
classic publication!"
A New Testament View of Women contains a detailed exegesis of all
of the New Testament passages that deal specifically with the role
of women. In many cases I translated the Greek myself for a clearer
understanding. The content has been carefully researched from commentaries,
as well as historical sources. I have related the Scriptures to
the social structure of the New Testament era, especially the Apostle
Paul's "problem" passages, in which he seems to place
drastic limitations on the freedom of women. My goal was to present
a solid biblical view, based on valid exegetical methods that are
accepted and practiced by evangelicals. While scholarly in content,
the book is written in a popular, non-academic style.
SYNOPSIS
A New Testament View of Women
What Jesus really said about women and how Christians
should apply his teachings

INTRODUCTION: A Personal Journey
This introduction recounts the dramatic experience that led to
my decision to enroll in the school of theology in the seminary
when few women were doing that. It also tells why I wrote the book.
PART I INTRODUCTION: Jesus View of Women
CHAPTER 1: Women in the Kingdom
Chapter includes discussion of passages that illustrate ways Jesus
laid the foundation for the active involvement of women in the work
of His kingdom. He emphasized this involvement by accepting women
as serious disciples, emphasizing their partnership role, and identifying
them as leaders in the kingdom. Sections:
1. Women As Leaders (Luke 13:18-20, 15:4-10).
2. Women As Disciples (Luke 10:38-42)
3. Women As Partners (Gen. 1:27-28, 2:24; Matt. 19:3-6)
CHAPTER 2: Women in Jesus' Earthly Ministry
Traces involvement of women in Jesus' earthly ministry and how
this involvement provided a model for the involvement of women in
the work of the early church. Sections:
1. Women and Financial support (Luke 8:1-3)
2. Women and Emotional support (John 12:3-8)
3. Women and Proclamation (John 4:7-42; Luke 23:55 to 24:11)
PART II: The Apostles View of Women
CHAPTER 3: Women in the New Testament Home
Presents the mutual-submission concept of husband and wife as an
outgrowth of the mutual submission Paul called for on the part of
all Christians. As such, both husband and wife have responsibilities
as equals in Christ (Gal. 3:28). Sections:
1. A Call for Mutual Submission (Eph. 5:21)
2. Responsibility of Husbands (Eph. 5:25-33)
3. Responsibility of Wives (Eph. 5:22-24; 33)
4. A Final Reminder About Mutual Submission
CHAPTER 4: Women in the New Testament Church
Traces leadership involvement of women in the New Testament church.
Beginning with the prayer meetings immediately following Jesus'
ascension and the empowerment by the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, women
were actively involved in the ministry of the church. Evidence indicates
they were prophets, teachers, and deacons in the early church. Sections:
1. Women Praying and Voting (Acts 1:12-26)
2. Women Indwelled and Empowered (Joel 2:28-29; Acts 2:16-18)
3. Women Receiving and Using Gifts (1 Cor. 12:4-12; Eph.
4:11-12; Acts 16:11-40, 18:24-26, 21:9;Rom. 16:1-2; Phil 4:2-3;
1 Tim. 3:8-13, 5:9-10)
CHAPTER 5. Women and Problems in the New Testament
Church
Examines problems created when women applied revolutionary teachings
of equality in a society that was not ready to accept such teachings.
The point is made that Paul's instructions were given to solve problems
that developed in specific areas. Sections:
1. Corinth: A Pagan City
2. Christian Freedom in Corinth (1 Cor. 11:2-12)
3. Freedom Vs. Custom: A Continuing Conflict (1 Cor. 14:34-35;
1 Tim. 2:9-15)
4. Learning to Use Freedom: Then and Now
CHAPTER 6: Women: Equal in All Relationships
Discusses the implications of the biblical texts on the future
involvement of both women and men in the work of the church. As
a final section, Christians are challenged to model the equality
that Jesus taught. Sections:
1. A Point of Reference (Gal. 3:28)
2. A Neglected Statement
3. Equality Vs. Identity
4. Implementing Revolutionary Truths
FROM THIS POINT ON
By Jesus sacrificial death, He opened to all believers Gods
holy of holies (Mark 15:37-38). Because of His victory, each believer,
male and female has unlimited access to God. This new relationship
places each personmale and femaleon an equal footing
before God. Together, Christian men and women should work to make
this equality a reality in church and society.
